Concert - Johann Strauss

Concert - Johann Strauss

Thursday 07 May

Historic town of Merano (Merano)

18:00 - 19:30

The programme consists of splendid pieces (many of which are very rare and performed at most every 10–20 years) by Johann Strauss and his family, as well as other composers of light music, including Carl Michael Ziehrer, Paul Lincke and Robert Stolz.
The “Waltz King” Johann Strauss composed not only waltzes, but also pieces in other genres, such as polkas, polka-veloces and marches, which will be performed in the concert. Beauty and grace are not only attributes of the waltz, but also of the march. German composers, and Austrian composers in particular, succeeded in transforming the march, originally serious and purely functional in nature, into light and elegant music.
Radim Akopian interprets the music of Strauss and composers of his era according to his own vision, bringing waltzes, polkas and marches as close as possible to the original orchestral versions. In his work on Strauss's compositions, he has studied orchestral recordings and scores in detail, adding to his piano performance the details and precision that are often lacking in simplified piano reductions. This is a very interesting and at the same time very complex task.
Only about 20% of Strauss's recordings are truly worthwhile. It is difficult to understand how to interpret the Viennese waltz stylistically, which is why almost all good recordings are made by the Vienna Philharmonic or other Austrian orchestras.
There are also pieces that have never been recorded. Or pieces that, although they have been recorded, do not have scores available for purchase. All these difficulties represent a certain barrier to the study of this music, but they also serve as motivation to make it known.
