A European-style concert evening in Bolzano brings together two mandolin orchestras, highlighting the rich tradition and widespread presence of this instrument across the continent.
The Euterpe Mandolin Orchestra hosts the Rudolstadt Mandolin Orchestra for a program in several parts. The first half features the historic ensemble from Rudolstadt, founded in 1919 and conducted by Daniela Heise. This is followed by the Bolzano plucked string orchestra under the direction of Ugo Orrigo. The evening concludes with a joint performance by both orchestras.
Founded in 1919, the “Wanderlust” Mandolin Orchestra from Rudolstadt has developed over more than a century into an established ensemble. Despite interruptions during World War II, its activity resumed in 1946 and has continued to grow ever since.
Over the decades, various conductors have shaped the orchestra’s artistic direction, expanding its repertoire to include modern compositions. International tours, collaborations, and a busy concert schedule—around 30 performances per year—demonstrate its ongoing vitality. Since 1993, the orchestra has been formally organized as an association.
This concert offers an opportunity to experience the mandolin as a key instrument in European musical culture, connecting historical roots with contemporary expression.
