The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra returns to Dobbiaco (Toblach) with conductor Philippe Jordan to perform Bruckner's Fourth Symphony ('Romantic') alongside Bartók's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. This colourful work, filled with a distinct tension, highlights Bartók's multifaceted character: the visionary architect, the detail-oriented polyphonist, and the passionate explorer of folk music. A latent sense of foreboding is also inherent in both Bartók's and Bruckner's music. Although written in 1874, Bruckner revised his Fourth Symphony several times until 1889. It embodies the spirit of German Romanticism, blending a deep connection to nature with a yearning for the Middle Ages.
