I jun a munt - The traditional mowing

I jun a munt - The traditional mowing

Sunday 17 Aug

La Val

09:00 - 18:00

This celebration honours the beautiful mountain meadows and the traditions of the past. During this fascinating hike through the freshly mown meadows of Ciavaza and Rit, you’ll embark on a journey back in time – following the traces of forgotten traditions, ancient working methods, and lovingly reinterpreted dishes.

You’ll be part of an engaging programme that passionately revives the hard but proud management of the Dolomite meadows. Witness the traditional hay harvest, done by hand with scythe and rake or with historical and modern agricultural machinery. The young farmers of the region will enthusiastically share how mountain meadows are cared for then and now – with stories, knowledge, and passion.

Gastronomic highlights along the route

Delicate Cajincí filled with spinach and ricotta, enhanced with carob flour, golden melted butter, and freshly grated cheese – a creamy, savoury delight.

Young farmers: A tasty speck platter with tangy cheese, followed by homemade apple strudel for a sweet ending, just as tradition calls for.

Farmers: Hearty smoked Kaminwurst served with crispy Schüttelbrot – rustic, robust, and full of flavour.

Music will also play a key role: the women’s choir of La Val will accompany the hike in the truest sense of the word, creating special moments along the route. Live music at the gastronomic stops will add to the welcoming and festive atmosphere.

The Nature Park will be present with its own information stand. Here, you can learn more about the mountain meadows – a true natural treasure, an untouched paradise rich in biodiversity. Shaped over centuries by the hard work and dedication of farmers, these meadows provide a refuge for countless species of animals and plants.

The circular hike is about 7 km long with an elevation gain of roughly 400 metres – an easy, scenic route, perfect for those wishing to spend a day in nature, surrounded by tradition, flavours, and breathtaking Dolomite views.

A free shuttle runs from the village centre (bus stop next to the church) to the starting point, with an intermediate stop at the sports field in La Val.
Operating times: 08:30 – 10:30 and 16:00 – 18:00.
For those arriving by car, it is recommended to book a parking space in advance via the La Val website: www.laval.it

“I jun a munt” is more than just a hike – it is an authentic experience between past and present, bringing you closer to the farming culture of the Val Badia and highlighting its enduring value.
