With Peter Pan - The Dark Side, David Pountney and Wolfgang Mitterer offer a new look at the story of the boy who never wanted to grow up. The story Peter and Wendy by James Matthew Barrie was written in 1911. Peter Pan lives with the "Lost Boys" in Neverland. On a trip to London, Peter meets the girl Wendy. He takes her and her brothers John and Michael to Neverland. Contrary to what the Disney version suggests, the fact that the children do not grow up there has no magical background in the original. Pountney gets to the bottom of these dark and uneasy moments in the story. Wolfgang Mitterer, pioneer of electro-acoustic music, succeeds in capturing the dark story with its humorous moments as well, in a mixture of electronics, orchestra and voice. Director Daisy Evans - who has already staged the silent opera Vixen for the Haydn Foundation in 2019 - shows Wendy as a young teenager in the grip of social media and fake news. Seduced by Peter Pan, she drifts off into a world where reality and fantasy blur. A story begins in the realm of shadows and human abysses.

Peter Pan - The Dark Side is commissioned by the Haydn Foundation with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Milan. The opera is a co-production with the Tiroler Landestheater, supported by the British Council.
