Today, we understand the future as a calculable continuation of the current situation. We find the roots of the future by analysing the present state and recognising the trends or dynamics that determine it. To this end, it is useful to trace the present back to the past, to understand it as the result of a longer-term development. The future, understood from the present with the help of the past, brings challenges; as humanity, we are “capable of the future” to the extent that we prepare ourselves to face these challenges and do what they require of us. Is there another meaningful way of understanding the future, its roots and our ability to be future-oriented?
