he South Tyrol Museum of Natural History is hosting a lecture on the zooplankton of the province's lakes, presented by limnologist Bertha Thaler. Zooplankton – microscopic animals living suspended in water – plays a key role in the lake ecosystem.
The lecture, held in German, will cover the systematics, life habits, adaptation strategies and ecological importance of zooplankton. It will also present the findings of long-term research (1979–2015) carried out in South Tyrolean lakes along an altitudinal gradient, from the valley floor to the high mountain zone, focusing on species biodiversity, differences between lakes at varying altitudes, and the influence of environmental factors.
Bertha Thaler worked from 1979 to 2015 at the Biological Laboratory of the Provincial Agency for the Environment and Climate Protection of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and is a member of the South Tyrol Flora working group.
