On 17 July, Anna Basti takes over Piazza Walther and Parco Berloffa for an hour of classical dance outdoors, and everyone is invited. No mirrors. No auditions. No judgement.
Le classique c'est chic! has existed since 2019 with a simple premise: classical ballet technique was never meant to be the exclusive property of a few. Strip away the aesthetic perfectionism, and what remains is something genuinely useful — a way of moving through space, of listening to your own body, of being present in a public place alongside strangers. An accessible, intergenerational and spontaneous practice, and an act of collective care that transforms something that often excludes into something that includes.
Anna Basti is a dancer, performer and independent researcher with a background in classical and contemporary dance. She trained at the Ballet School of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma and in Paris. Since 2013 she has developed her own research practice. Since 2016 she has collaborated with performer Chiara Caimmi as the duo basti/caimmi, creating UNLOCK, a research platform investigating how mechanisms of control act on our bodies. From Le classique c'est chic! emerged the side-project Carmen_nous sommes toustes des etoiles, which rewrites the narratives of classical ballets with non-professional groups and specific communities. Her projects have been presented at Lavanderia a Vapore and RicercaX (Turin), Festival Fuori Programma and Festival Intersezioni (Rome), Festival Danza Estate (Bergamo) and Supernova (Rimini).
