Whit Monday offers the chance to explore South Tyrol's provincial museums, with special openings and a wide programme covering history, nature, mining and the night sky.
In Bolzano, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology (10 am–6 pm) is home to Ötzi and the temporary exhibition "Under Propaganda", which takes a critical look at the role of archaeology during Nazism and Fascism. Also in the city, the South Tyrol Museum of Natural Sciences (10 am–6 pm) presents "Funga", an exhibition devoted to the world of fungi, alongside the photo exhibition "Queer Nature Photography Awards", offering new perspectives on biodiversity; the permanent collection explores the geology and habitats of South Tyrol. The South Tyrol Planetarium rounds off Bolzano's offer with four shows, ranging from a brave little mouse's journey to the Moon and a voyage through the solar system to the spectacular music show "The Dark Side of the Moon", featuring the music of Pink Floyd.
Nearby, the Touriseum – Provincial Museum of Tourism at Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano (9 am–7 pm) invites visitors to explore the culture of travel past and present, with temporary exhibitions including "Shaped Paradises – On People and Gardens" and "Architecture on the Move", which traces the architectural connections between Munich and Bolzano during the Belle Époque.
The Provincial Mining Museum opens all three of its sites: in Ridanna, historic machinery comes back to life in the tunnels and ore processing plant; in Predoi, a mine railway leads deep into the Sant'Ignazio tunnel, with the option to visit the underground climate gallery; and in Cadipietra, the focus is on the lives of the people who shaped the mining industry. At Franzensfeste Fortress (10 am–6 pm), visitors can explore the entire former military complex and see the exhibitions "Cathedral in the Desert" and "Bunkered. Bunkers in South Tyrol". Finally, the South Tyrol Museum of Popular Traditions and Customs (10 am–5 pm) brings rural life from centuries past back to life, together with the photo exhibition "Memories in Frames. 50 Years of Museum History".
