Rosas danst Rosas
Italian premiere
Created in 1983. Never performed in Italy. Until now. When Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker made Rosas danst Rosas she was 23 years old and practically unknown. The work that emerged — built on obsessive repetition, everyday gesture and the relentless score by Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch — permanently changed contemporary dance. After nearly 500 performances over 43 years, the piece returns in 2026 with an entirely new cast — and comes to Italy for the first time, brought by Bolzano Danza.
The four performers «dance themselves» without pause for 100 minutes, trapped in a choreographic structure that transforms repetition into resistance, endurance and finally liberation. Often read as a feminist statement, the piece draws its force from the tension between this relentless insistence and the impeccable formal structure of the choreography. The 1997 film version became as iconic as the stage production itself; the platform Re:Rosas! — followed by Beyoncé among others — continues to invite people worldwide to learn the chair choreography and share their own interpretation.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (1960) is one of the most celebrated figures in contemporary dance. She founded the Rosas company in 1983 and the school P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels in 1995. Recent works include Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione (2024) and BREL (2025).
